My 2024 Booklist

Happy New Year! This year is my year to unplug from screens more often and finish a few books. Usually my reading lists have 5-10 books, but the way life has been lately I am slimming down the list to just three. If I squeeze in more, great. If not, no pressure. This year I’m putting less demands on myself and soaking in pleasure that suits my lifestyle. I am often on-the-go, so I enjoy keeping a book on my hip for downtime. If you decide to read any of these books or have any suggestions, email me your thoughts at creesahidah@gmail.com. I’d love to hear what you think!

Book 1: 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen R. Covey

Don’t let the title of this book turn you away if you don’t have little ones. This book is beneficial for all of us because well, we all have families. Even if they are by blood or not we make our own families and have to maintain those relationships to the best of our abilities. Author Stephen R. Covey is phenomenal in the way he writes his real life examples about navigating family conflict and success with his wife and 9 children. One of my favorite parts of this book is the “Circle of Influence” vs. the “Circle of Concern”. Proactive people focus on their circle of influence, which embraces the things you can actually do something about. The circle of concern embraces things that you cannot change - such as someone else’s behavior. Anyways, I am about 1/4 through this book and it is absolutely juicy with knowledge so far. You can purchase the book here or at your local bookstore (Support local businesses please)!

Book #2: The Highly Sensitive: How to Find Inner Peace, Develop Your Gifts, and Thrive by Judy Dyer

This book is on my reading list because I am finally beginning to embrace my “sensitive” side. For years I was teased for being sensitive and not having “thick skin”. In my opinion, I think I do have thick skin and toughness because I often had to defend my personality and core spirit. I have yet to open this book up, but I think it will be beneficial for those of us who recognize our sensitivity to hurtful words and behaviors, and how to move closer toward loving kindness. This is the year to lean into our natural gifts and appreciate who we are at our inner core. You can purchase the book on Thrift Books here.

Book #3: Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban

Did you see that one coming? I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I haven’t read the books in over 10 years. Although I love a good self-help book, some leisurely fantasy reading would bring me so much joy this year. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a fiction novel.

A friend of mine reread the Harry Potter series last year and reminded me how much fun it was to dive nose deep in this series as a child. I need a dose of nostalgia every now and then, so come this autumn I am dusting off some of my old HP books left at my mother’s house. You can purchase the Prisoner of Azkaban of Thrift Books here.
