4 Realistic Side Hustles For Stay At Home Moms

Monetize A Simple Craft
This one is the most obvious coming from me because I am an artist and love creating! Making money from my creations is the cherry on top. You can find a craft such as knitting, making pottery, or jewelry making to create into your own brand. This isn’t an overnight process but it is the funnest one in my personal opinion. You can work on your craft while watching a movie with the kids, while they’re taking a nap or with a trusted caretaker. Once you have enough supply, you can take your creations to local craft fairs to vend. Sometimes local farmers markets allow artisans to vend too. April - December are the most popular months for craft fairs. Many artists depend on holiday craft fairs alone to pay the bills. Be aware that most craft fairs require a vending fee from $25 - $250+ (depending on the fair). It’s always good to start small and work your way up as you gain more experience. It’s never too late to start!
Dog Walking / Dog Sitting
I love this side hustle especially because my family doesn’t own any pets of our own just yet. Every now and then we get a cute little pup to take care of for a few days - or even a few weeks. If there is a long stay we adjust the prices so it’s affordable for the pet owner. My kids absolutely loved walking our guest dog and having a furry friend to come home to. Use the app “ROVER” to create your profile to begin dog watching. You don’t need to have a backyard, fancy house or even pets of your own. Being a caring person - just like how you are with your kids, is what matters the most. I only encourage this side hustle if you’re an animal lover and have the pets’ best interest in mind. Make sure your profile says that you have children so that you only care for pets who are friendly with kids. Keep in mind Rover requires a $35 registration fee.
Babysitting
You already have kids…but did you think about watching more kiddos? If you don’t mind caring for another child, this side hustle is for you. If the child you’re watching is the same age as your child - even better! But how do you get the word out that you’re a caretaker? Apps such as “Care.com” or “UrbanSitter” can help you create a profile to find babysitters. Care.com is where we met one of our best nannies. Keep in mind that parents enjoy sitters who have credentials such as Red Cross Training or CPR training. You can also get the word out by finding local mothers groups in your community or making a post on Facebook. To make it easy, create a simple flyer on Canva with your schedule and prices.
4. Beauty Services
This is one side hustle I haven’t done myself but I have seen many other stay at home mothers bring in cash this way. You can learn how to braid, wax eyebrows or install lashes. Even if you’re good at makeup, you can give one-on-one makeup lessons. There are so many mothers out there willing to pay to get their daughters/sons hair braided (including myself) in order to save time and energy. If you have a beauty skill, create a flyer with your services on Canva, and post it on social media. You can even print some flyers at the local library and post them around town. Watch the word spread and the income begin to roll in.
And remember…save save save! This is your hard earned money. Please remember to save a portion of your income in a certificate of deposit, money market or savings account.
Good luck mama!
